The Crooked Jades are creators of unique sounds by exploring the roots of rural Americana, pushing boundaries and blurring categories with their fiery, soulful performances. Innovative, unpredictable and passionate, they bring their driving dance tunes and haunting ballads to rock clubs, festivals, traditional folk venues and concert halls across America and Europe.
Skillet Licorice is the latest project from San Francisco Bay Area roots-music luminaries Elise Engelberg and Matt Knoth. Essentially a musical consortium, Matt & Elise are the core of an All-Star lineup featuring many of California's hottest old-time musicians. The result is a full fledged proto-swing orchestra capable of expert musicianship in a dizzying array of folk genres. Whether they’re playing hot fiddle breakdowns, slinky blues, sparkling banjo breaks, ragtime or dreamy waltzes Skillet Licorice displays an impressive command of styles and techniques that comes from deep study and loving dedication to America’s folk traditions. With the help of their talented friends they’ve put together an incredible repertoire that is essentially traditional, yet with a modern approach that is anything but stale. Skillet Licorice is hot, sweet, and just a bit greasy!
Robin Fischer is a fiddler, square dance caller, music teacher, and community organizer based in Oakland, CA. Robin is one of the premier voices amongst California old time square dance callers. A lover of high energy, dance-inspiring old time music, she calls in the traditional style - no lessons, no levels, no prerecorded music, just a live band and emphasis on everyone having a good time. Robin has called dances up and down the west coast, including at the Berkeley Old Time Music Convention, The CBA Father’s Day Bluegrass Festival, Los Angeles Old Time Social, Austin Stringband Festival, Sierragrass, Walker Creek Music Camp, and community dances from Seattle to San Diego.
